Guide to Bilbao - a city for 3 days

A detailed three-day plan for you to enjoy Bilbao, the capital of the Basque country, and discover its cultural and gastronomic highlights.

Day 1: Historical and Cultural Bilbao

Morning:

  • Guggenheim Museum: Start your journey with one of the city's most iconic landmarks. This museum of modern art, designed by architect Frank Gehry, is known not only for its collection but also for its impressive architecture.
  • Public Sculpture Park around the museum: Don't miss sculptures such as Jeff Koons' "Puppy."

Day:

  • Old Town (Casco Viejo): Explore the "Seven Streets" (Las Siete Calles), walk the narrow streets with numerous boutiques, cafes, and historic buildings.
  • Plaza Nueva: A great place to try traditional "pintxos" (local tapas) in one of the many bars.

Evening:

  • Arriaga Theater: If you're interested in performances, find out about the theater's current events. The building impresses with its architecture.

Day 2: Modern Bilbao

Morning:

  • Azkuna Center and Exhibition Center: Dedicate the morning to exploring contemporary art. Various exhibitions and events take place here.
  • Alhondiga Building (now known as Azkuna Center): This converted wine cellar has an interesting interior design. Here you can find cinemas, restaurants, and exhibition halls.

Day:

  • Abandoibarra district: Modern architecture and walking spaces along the Nervión River.
  • Zubizuri Bridge: The white, arched bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava offers excellent views of the city and river.

Evening:

  • Indautxu district: Enjoy the nightlife atmosphere of Bilbao with its bars and restaurants. It's a great place to experience the local cuisine.

Day 3: Natural and Surrounding Beauties

Morning:

  • Punta Galea Dunes Park: A great place for a morning walk and enjoying nature.
  • Mount Artxanda (Arxandia): Climb the Artxanda funicular and enjoy breathtaking views of the city.

Day:

  • Portugalete and the Vizcaya Hanging Bridge: A short metro ride to see the impressive bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world, and you can even take a ride on it.

Evening:

  • Beach and port in Getxo: Spend the evening on the coast, enjoying the views of the Atlantic and, weather permitting, beach activities.

This itinerary will allow you to explore both the historical and modern aspects of Bilbao, as well as enjoy its natural beauty. Don't forget about pintxos and be sure to try various dishes of the local cuisine!
