Guide to Gimmaynshu for 1 day

Guimarães is a city in the northern part of Portugal, considered the birthplace of the country as it was here that the Portuguese state originated. If you have one day to explore Guimarães, here is the optimal route and places worth visiting:

  1. Breakfast in the city center: Start your day with breakfast at one of the cozy cafes in the historic center. Be sure to try traditional Portuguese pastries, such as pastel de nata.

  2. Guimarães Castle: Head to Guimarães Castle (Castelo de Guimarães), dating back to the 10th century. It is one of Portugal's most important historic monuments and a symbol of national independence.

  3. Palace of the Dukes of Braganza: Next to the castle is the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza (Paço dos Duques de Bragança). This majestic palace was built in the 15th century and now houses a museum with a rich collection of exhibits.

  4. Church of São Miguel: Be sure to visit the small Romanesque Church of São Miguel do Castelo, where, according to legend, the first king of Portugal, Afonso I, was baptized.

  5. Stroll through the historic center: Wander the streets of the historic center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pay special attention to Largo da Oliveira square and the Oliveira Church.

  6. Lunch: Enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants, trying traditional Minho dishes such as bacalhau and vinho verde wine.

  7. Alberto Sampaio Museum: Visit the Alberto Sampaio Museum, which houses an interesting collection of religious art, textiles, silverware, and ceramics.

  8. Cable car and Penha Mountain: In the afternoon, take the cable car (Teleférico de Guimarães) to the top of Penha Mountain. From the top, you'll have a stunning view of the city and surroundings. You can also visit the sanctuary of Senhora da Penha.

  9. Dinner: Back in the city, end the day with dinner at one of the restaurants with a terrace, enjoying the evening in Guimarães.

  10. Nighttime city stroll: If you have time and energy, take a stroll through the city at night, enjoying the atmosphere and illuminated streets.

Guimarães is charming with its history and modern way of life, so even one day here will be rich and memorable.
