Madrid 1-day Guide

To visit Madrid in one day is a challenging task, but quite achievable if you plan your route properly. Here is my recommended one-day itinerary:

Morning:

  1. Puerta del Sol Square: Start your day at one of the most famous squares in Madrid. This is where the "zero kilometers" is located - the point from which all road distances in Spain are measured. Don't forget to take a photo with the symbol of Madrid - the statue of the bear with the strawberry tree.
  2. Plaza Mayor: Just a few minutes walk away is Plaza Mayor - an impressive square surrounded by historic buildings. Here you can have a cup of coffee and enjoy the atmosphere.
  3. San Miguel Market: A great spot for breakfast or an early lunch. Enjoy tapas and invigorating Spanish coffee.

Day:

  1. Royal Palace: Take a stroll to the Royal Palace. It is open to the public and offers tours of its majestic halls. Don't forget to visit the Sabatini Gardens next to the palace.
  2. Almudena Cathedral: Located opposite the palace, this cathedral impresses with its architecture and interiors. Entrance to the cathedral is free, but donations are welcome.
  3. Buen Retiro Park: An oasis in the city center. Take a walk through the park, sit by the lake with boats, and visit the Crystal Palace. A great place to relax after a busy morning.

Evening:

  1. Prado Museum or Queen Sofia Museum: Choose one of these famous museums depending on your interests. In the Prado, you will find works by Velazquez and Goya, while the Queen Sofia Museum houses Picasso and Dali.
  2. Gran Via: Stroll down Madrid's main street, pulsing with life and commerce. Plenty of shops, restaurants, and beautiful buildings.
  3. Dinner in the La Latina or Malasana district: These areas are known for their restaurants and bars. Try traditional dishes like paella or jamon, and end the day with a glass of Spanish wine or sangria.

Useful Tips:

  • Transport: Metro and bus tickets can be purchased at machines. Also, the city center is convenient for walking.
  • Language: English is common, but basic phrases in Spanish are always welcomed.
  • Opening hours: Many shops and restaurants are closed for siesta from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
  • Safety: Madrid is a safe city, but be careful with your belongings in crowded places.

I hope this guide helps you fully enjoy your day in Madrid!
