Marseille 2-day Guide

Marseille is a vibrant city in the south of France, known for its port, rich history, and cultural diversity. Here is a rough itinerary for two days so you can fully enjoy Marseille.

Day 1: Historic Center and Cultural Sites

Morning:

  • Vieux-Port (Old Port): Start your day at the famous Old Port. Take a stroll along the waterfront, enjoy the view of yachts and city corners. There are plenty of cafes where you can have breakfast with a sea view.
  • Le Panier: Explore Marseille's oldest district, Le Panier. Narrow streets, colorful buildings, and street art create a unique atmosphere. Visit the Vieille Charité - a former almshouse, now a museum.

Day:

  • Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM): Visit this modern museum focusing on the history and culture of the Mediterranean. Don't forget to go up to the terrace with stunning views of the city and the sea.
  • Marseille Cathedral (Cathédrale La Major): One of the largest cathedrals in France, combining elements of Romanesque and Byzantine styles.

Evening:

  • Enjoy a nice dinner at one of the restaurants on the Corniche waterfront. We recommend trying the "bouillabaisse" (Marseille fish soup).

Day 2: Nature and Panoramic Views

Morning:

  • Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica: Marseille's main attraction located 160 meters above sea level. It offers a magnificent view of the city. It's best to get there early in the morning to avoid crowds.

Day:

  • Walk along the Calanques: Head to the Calanques National Park - unique Mediterranean coves and cliffs. It's best to get there by boat from the port or on foot. Enjoy breathtaking views and swim in crystal clear waters.
  • Picnic or lunch at one of the restaurants near the Calanques. Local establishments offer fresh seafood and traditional Provencal cuisine.

Evening:

  • Stroll through the Cours Julien district: This bohemian neighborhood is known for its street art, bars, and cafes. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the evening atmosphere of Marseille.
  • Concert or theatrical performance: Marseille often hosts cultural events, so check local listings and attend one if possible.

Tips:

  • Try local wines and cheeses.
  • Use public transportation or rent a bike to explore the city.
  • Take note of the local restaurant and store opening hours, as they may close for lunch or earlier in the evening.

Enjoy your visit to Marseille!
